Bruce Muma, MD

Senior Advisor, Clinical Operations

In his executive roles within the Henry Ford Physician Network and Mosaic Accountable Care Organization, Dr. Muma supports clinical integration across a broad platform of more than 2,000 physicians. These integrative efforts include developing metrics and dashboards to improve provider performance, collaborating with clinical leaders to identify opportunities to improve value, as well as promoting clinical policies and programs to create more effective and efficient care delivery models.

A practicing Internist, Dr. Muma has led numerous improvement initiatives across Henry Ford Health, including creating inpatient care pathways using advanced practice providers, implementing an internal IPD admission review service, developing ambulatory chronic disease management programs (Diabetes, Depression, Lipid Management, COPD), launching the first electronic prescribing program in Southeast Michigan, establishing electronic visits within an EMR, building advanced access models for primary care and developing high risk care management programs. He is a student of LEAN methodologies and has served as a Baldrige examiner for the State of Michigan.

As part of his work within value-based contracting for Henry Ford Health and the HFPN, Dr. Muma has been instrumental in the design and implementation of two direct-to-employer contracts. These are the General Motors “Connected Care” healthcare option for GM salaried employees in Southeast Michigan – which will enter its second five-year agreement starting in 2024 – and the oversight of two Henry Ford Health self-funded employee healthcare options. As with the Mosaic ACO and its predecessor, the Henry Ford Accountable Care Organization, these D2E risk/reward contacts have yielded millions of dollars in shared savings for its participating providers due to their success in achieving ambitious quality standards and cost efficiencies.

Dr. Muma also has experience in redesigning care processes and creating population health programs designed to achieve the Quadruple Aim in healthcare. Most recently, he has devoted his expertise to developing a high-risk polychronic framework, which can aid providers in the treatment of these high-cost patients with an aim toward finding pathways for greater health outcomes at lower costs. He has led the development of several programs designed to reduce low value, post-acute care including the “Why Not Home” initiative across Henry Ford Hospitals to prevent unneeded SNF admissions as well as the “Post-Acute Surveillance” program to reduce SNF length of stay. This work aptly reflects his passion for health care and continuously striving to create tangible value for patients and communities.

Dr. Muma is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He received his medical education at Wayne State University and completed his combined residency at Henry Ford Hospital. He is a fellow in the American College of Physicians.
